Dear Charles Evans Students and Families,

The Charles Evans staff and I welcome and invite you to join us for an exciting and successful school year. Mrs. Wendel, Mr. Falvey, and I have assembled a very talented and committed team for the 2013-2014 school year. Combined, they have a total of 500+ years of teaching and education expertise. Likewise, over 40% hold degrees beyond their bachelor degree in education.

This year we are continuing the AVID program [Advancement Via Individual Achievement] in third through fifth grade. We are also excited to introduce key AVID strategies in first and second grade this year. Next, we have rededicated our commitment to the Great Expectations model. We have set the goal at Charles Evans to work toward achieving Model Status. As a veteran educator, I have personally seen the positive impact that this program has on student success.

In addition, we are using the well-known book Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success, written by legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. This motivational book for elementary students outlines 14 building blocks in his Pyramid of Success:

Personal Best

Poise Confidence

Fitness Skill Team Spirit

Self-Control Alertness Action Determination

Hard Work Friendship Loyalty Cooperation Enthusiasm

These 14 building blocks will be the foundation for our monthly Rise & Shine assemblies and student celebrations. Each month “All Star Characters” will be nominated and recognized for exemplifying demonstrating positive life skill traits.

So, from every single staff member at Charles Evans, we say, “Welcome.” The “All-Star Teachers” are suited up and ready to go! Your child is our “All Star Student” that will complete team.

Respectfully,

Denise Brunk
